New 2018 BMW 6 Series GT leaked
The new 2018 BMW 6 Series GT has leaked ahead of its anticipated debut later this year, confirming that BMW will move its tall roofed, SUV inspired saloon out of the 5 Series range.
The move to badge the new Gran Turismo as a 6 Series model confirms BMW’s intentions to move its sole luxury coupe offering upmarket – with the current 6 Series morphing into the larger, more luxurious 8 Series, arriving on sale in 2018 as a genuine rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. A high-performance M8 variant is on the cards too.
The move also creates a new level of distance between the standard 5 Series saloon and estate bodied Touring version. It puts the executive hatchback – never a big seller whilst wearing the 5 Series badge – within a new space in the range.
Despite the new name, it heavily takes on new 5 Series design cues, with similar headlights and taillights, plus the same gill behind the front wheel. However, compared to the old 5 Series GT it’s sleeker, and BMW has tapered the rear end into a more natural, rakish shape.
We’ve no details just yet on powertrains, but it’ll more than likely carry over the same selection of diesel and petrol engines found in the new 5 Series. The car pictured is a 630d xDrive, confirming that a 3.0-litre twin-turbodiesel six-cylinder will be available, alongside all-wheel-drive.
With these images finding their way onto the web a full reveal could be imminent, and a full debut in the metal looks set to take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September before it hits BMW forecourts next year.
